Handy, Frank Robert (b. 13 JUL 1947, d. ?)
Note: I have so much that there is no way I could write it down in such a short space. I first was sent to Vietnam in June of 1965 I spent a Year in support of the Marines off loading everything from cokes to bombs. I was a heavy equipment operator in Danang,Vietnam. I just ducked snipers didn't drop too many bombs so I made it through my first year. I was sent to a destroyer USS Hyman out of New Orleans but I was very sea sick and asked for a transfer to a land base. Well that did not go to well for my "Capitan" so I was sent to be trained for the River Patrol force and I was lucky enough to draw a Marine Seal Team Captain as my training officer and we went on training for 12 weeks. I was the gunner on the boat and the coxwain. That means I made sure all the guns were in proper working order and I drove the boat. I went to Vietnam in June of 1967 and left in June 1968.I went out with Seal Teams dropped them off at dusk and picked them up at dawn. I did a lot of killing especially during the Tet Offensive. I was on 12 on 12 off duty for one year, and I had so many fire fights I don't even remember the tally. The Vietnamese lost about 3 million people, and I made a dent in that number. War is either kill, or be killed. I was wounded a number of times but they were only flesh wounds and I did not report them. Yes I have a purple heart, but that was put in for me I did not request it, nor did I request the other medals that were issued to me. Uncle Frank

The Secretary of the Navy takes pleasure in presenting the Navy Commendation Medal to

Frank Robert Handy
Seaman
United States Navy

For service as set forth in the following:

CITATION

For heroic achievement while serving with friendly foreign forces engaged in armed conflict against the Communist insurgent forces on the Upper Cong Tranh River, Rung Sat Special Zone, Republic of Vietnam on January 1968. Just prior to commencing a test firing run on a specified strike zone, River Patrol Boat 738 sustained a rocket hit on the after 50 caliber mount, rendering it useless. The hit wounded nine personnel on both boats, which were in close proximity to each other. Although having sustained multiple fragmentation wounds of the head, back and left arm, Seaman Handy immediately manned the after 50 caliber mount of River Patrol Boat 737, and fired 100 rounds into the Viet Cong emplacement. With complete disregard for his own wounds, and safety, he reloaded his gun, and delivered another 100 rounds of accurate fire into the enemy position. Because neither of the forward gun mounts could be brought to bear on the target, the after gun mount on River Patrol Boat 738 rendered useless, Seaman Handy's instantaneous return of heavy, and accurate fire was singularly responsible for the immediate suppression of Viet Cong fire. His prompt actions enabled the boats to clear the area with no further personnel, or material casualties. Seaman Handy's quick response, skill, sense of responsibility, and courage under fire were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service."
