Note: Ebenezer Handy was born about 1755 and died before 1785, probably in
Lee. We suspect that it may have been this Ebenezer Handy who married
at Tyringham 5 May 1777 Anne Barlow (Vital Records).
No proof has come to light that Cornelius Handy had a son named
Ebenezer, and we put together the following fragmentary records merely
as a basis for intensive research if there are living descendants of
this couple. We know that Samuel Barlow of Sandwich in his will of 1
Feb. 1771 names each of his grandchildren, among whom was a
granddaughter Anna, believed to have been a daughter of Samuel Barlow
by his first wife, Mary Handy, daughter of Zaccheus. We have been
unable to find probate records for that a number of members of this
branch of the Barlow family went from Sandwich to Lee and
neighboring towns in Berkshire County.
The Ebenezer Handy of Hartwood and Becket who served in the Revolution
would seem to be the man of that name who married Ann Barlow in nearby
Tyringham.
We also find that "Widow Anne Handy" is credited with at least three
children, surnamed Handy, in the Lee records. To complicate the
picture, the 'Town Records of the Town of Lee to 1801 (1900) at page
159 shows, under the heading "Children of Widow Anne Handy" in
addition to the three children listed in the published 'Vital Records'
of Lee: "Darius Carpenter, B. 18 May 1790" and Orsiah Hoose, B.
19June 1793". The compilers of the published vital records evidently
assumed that these last two children were Anne's by one or more other
men. To compound the puzzle, we find that marriage record 23 Nov.
1787 of Anne Handy of Lee to Daniel Parker, called "of Sandisfield" in
the intention of 17 Sept. 1797 (ibid., p.140). Nowhere does the
record state that Widow Anne Handy's husband was named Ebenezer, but
we find no other record of a suitable Anne (or Anna) Handy. Note,
however, that she named a son Ebenezer and a daughter Elizabeth, the
latter being the name of her only sibling if we have correctly
identified her, i.e. the other child born to Samuel and Mary (Handy)
Barlow.
This meagre picture intrigues us . We hope that church records of one
of the nearby Berkshire towns, Berkshire Country Court records or
family Bibles may make it possible to fill in the picture.
