Note: Teresa, a former nurse in her 80's told this story to Delia Handy Ybarra and Norma Handy Garcia (sisters). Norma had back problems, and the former nurse was doing massage therapy to supplement her income. She asked the ladies what their last name was, and when she heard their maiden name, asked if they were related to Chauncey S. Handy. They said, yes, he was their grandfather.
She said that Chauncey was a very handsome young man. He would ride the length of the family ranch to the Rio Grande River, and once there he would dismount his horse, and cool his feet in the river. She said that all the girls whose father had adjacent land to the Handy ranch would run to their windows as he rode by to stare at him. A girlish glow illuminated as she spoke of Chauncey, even though she was in her 80's.
She went on to say that one day he met a young man by the last name of Trevino cooling his feet at the river. They became friends, and seemed to meet often at the river. Trevino invited Chauncey to his home, and introduced him to his family, and it was there he met his sister, Eduvijes. At that point the nurse had a few choice words to describe Eduvijes. How many decades had passed, and she still held a grudge against Eduvijes for getting to him first?
Eduvijes would watch for Chauncey as he rode to the river, then rode sidesaddle after him to the river. Their relationship grew. Chauncey seemed to like Eduvijes' free spirit. They were married there after. Amazing that a schoolgirl crush could last so long.
